Fraudulent free online file converter tools offer services like converting or merging files—such as transforming a .doc file to a .pdf or combining multiple images into a single document.

While they perform the advertised tasks, they may also install hidden malware on users' computers.

This malware can grant criminals access to sensitive data, including Social Security numbers, banking details, cryptocurrency information, email addresses, and passwords.

Many victims remain unaware of the infection until significant damage occurs, such as identity theft or ransomware attacks.

To protect yourself from these scams, the FBI recommends:

  • Exercise Caution Online: Be mindful of the websites you visit and the tools you use, especially free online services.
  • Keep Software Updated: Ensure your antivirus and other security software are up to date. Always scan files before opening them.

If you suspect you've been targeted or have fallen victim to this scam:

  • Contact Financial Institutions: Notify your banks and take steps to safeguard your accounts.
  • Change Passwords: Update all passwords using a secure, trusted device.
  • Report the Incident: File a complaint with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov.
  • Scan for Malware: Use up-to-date antivirus software to detect and remove any malicious programs. Consider consulting professionals specializing in malware removal.
